China reports the first human case of H3N8 avian influenza
A 4-year-old boy in central China has been infected with H3N8 bird flu, and this is the first time the virus has been confirmed in humans. Scientists believe that pre-virus strains found in horses and dogs were responsible for the 1889 pandemic.
The Chinese National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement that a boy from Zhumadian City, Henan Province, developed symptoms such as fever on April 5, and was hospitalized on April 10 with worsening medical conditions. ..
“On the 24th, the China Disease Control and Prevention Center tested patient specimens sent from Henan Province, and the results were positive for the H3N8 avian influenza virus,” NHC said in a statement.
The child was in contact with chickens and crows raised at his home in Zhumadian, a city about 245 km (153 miles) north of Wuhan or 715 km (445 miles) northwest of Shanghai.
H3N8 is found in birds, but also in horses, and is one of the two viruses that cause canine flu. Researchers believe that the previous strain caused the 1889 pandemic known as the “Asian Cold” and the “Russian Cold,” but it was not confirmed in humans.
“In an expert preliminary assessment, the H3N8 avian influenza virus is of avian origin and is not yet capable of effectively infecting humans,” the NHC said in a statement. “This is an example of accidental bird-to-human cross-species transmission, and the risk of large-scale transmission is low.”
According to the Health Commission, close contact with children was tested negative for the virus. It urged people to avoid contact with poultry, especially poultry that died of illness.
