State officials confirm cases of bird flu found in Sequoyah County
SEQUOYAH COUNTY — A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was found and confirmed in Sequoyah County on Sunday, says the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture.
Positive cases were found in commercial poultry herds. It occurs almost a month after the first case of bird flu was discovered in a wild duck in Payne County.
The ban is set to end on July 30 unless there is evidence that it should be extended.
Dr. Rod Hall, a state veterinarian in Oklahoma, says he is ready to deal with bird flu.
“This HPAI case is not unexpected, but in preparation for this, we are working closely with the USDA and livestock producers to control and eradicate the disease from the state, enabling a bird flu response program. , Working hard with federal partners to prevent further spread of the virus. “
Recent cases of bird flu show no immediate public health concerns, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Eating poultry products is safe and there is no risk to food supply.
State authorities have placed quarantines at affected facilities, and federal and state partners have jointly assessed the extent of infection. Additional monitoring of all commercial and backyard poultry herds will begin in the area surrounding the affected facility.
Herd owners need to prevent contact between birds and wild birds and report sick and abnormal deaths to state authorities. Producers should contact the veterinarian immediately if the herd is suspected of showing signs of HPAI.
The signs of bird flu are:
- Sudden increase in bird mortality without clinical signs
- Lack of energy and appetite
- Decrease in egg production
- Soft, thin shells, or malformed eggs
- Swelling of the head, eyelids, combs, wattles, and hock
- Braided, comb, purple / blue discoloration of legs
- Out of breath (dyspnea)
- Cough, sneeze, and / or runny nose
- Stumble or fall
- diarrhea
