Last week, another 169 cases of influenza were reported in the area, the county health and welfare department announced today.
To date, 2,728 infections have been reported in San Diego County, compared to 788 cases during the same period last season.
No deaths from the new flu have been reported last week. The number of influenza-related deaths in the 2021/202 season remains five.
“Influenza can cause serious illness, especially in the elderly, small babies and children,” said County Public Health Officer Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH. “People who are at high risk of developing flu complications need to continue to take precautions.”
High-risk individuals include:
- People with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and lung disease, even if their symptoms are controlled
- Pregnant woman
- Those over 65 years old
- People who live with or take care of others at high risk
The latest influenza monitoring report from the County Health and Welfare Department shows that for the week ending April 30, 2022:
- Emergency department visits for influenza-like illness: 3% of all visits (compared to 3% last week).
- Cases of influenza identified in the lab that week: 169 (compared to 213 last week).
- Total number of cases confirmed in the lab so far: 2,728 (788 for the same period last season and 11,602 for the last five years of the same week).
- To date, five influenza-related deaths have been reported (compared to two in the same period last year).
Tips for preventing the flu
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all people over the age of 6 months be vaccinated against influenza each year. A total of 848 cases of influenza were reported in San Diego during the 2020-2021 influenza season, including two deaths. During the 2019-2020 influenza season, more than 20,700 cases of influenza were reported and 108 Sandigans died from influenza.
