5.5-magnitude earthquake prompts severe weather warning | News

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake, about 52 miles north of Cruz Bay in Saint John, hit residents Sunday morning.

The 9:33 am earthquake was felt across the territory and adjacent islands including the British Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands Regional Emergency Management Agency said, in two alerts Sunday morning, that there is no risk of a tsunami in the territory, but residents can expect dangerous weather conditions during this week.

“Based on all available data, there is no tsunami risk for Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands or the British Virgin Islands from this earthquake,” the warning noted. “People may have experienced the shaking from the earthquake.”

The National Atmospheric Administration said on its website that the quake posed no threat to the region. But a press release issued Sunday by the National Weather Service said the area had a “hazardous weather forecast.”

Coastal waters near the Atlantic and Caribbean were expected to see sustained winds in excess of 20 mph or 17 knots with a moderate risk of rip currents on all local beaches, according to the NWS.

Furthermore, dangerous marine conditions are expected with moderate risks of rip currents at most beaches through Saturday.

“Weather and marine conditions are expected to deteriorate by the latter part of the work week due to the approach of the region’s northwest frontier boundary and upper level floor crossing the western Atlantic,” NWS said.
