From Iceland – Civil Protection activates the level of “uncertainty” due to earthquakes

The Civil Protection and Emergency Management Department (Almannavarnir) has announced the activation of an “uncertainty” level due to the recent wave of earthquakes in the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The level of uncertainty indicates a time of instability; Conditions do not call for an emergency declaration yet, but scientists and rescue workers are closely monitoring the situation because conditions suggest it could become more dangerous. There have been 14 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater since Saturday afternoon, the largest of which was 4.3 on Sunday afternoon, located 5.4 kilometers west-northwest of Grindavik at a depth of 5.2 kilometers.

“Residents are encouraged to secure loose objects that may fall during an earthquake, especially those that could fall on people while they are sleeping,” says Manavarnier. “The Icelandic Met Office also called for attention to falling rocks or landslides that can occur suddenly on the slopes, so it’s a good idea to be especially careful on steep slopes.”

Kristin Gunsdottir, lead of the nature monitoring group at the Icelandic Met Office, told RÚV that these earthquakes are most likely due to movement of magma. When asked if this could lead to a volcanic eruption, she said, “Of course there’s nothing out of the question, it could end in an eruption, but it’s too early to say that.”
