Finland will formally join NATO despite Russian warning – BBC News

Finland has confirmed that it will apply for membership in NATO, regardless of the country’s neutral status since the end of World War II. Although Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of the move, he told his Finnish counterpart that joining NATO would be “a mistake.” President Sauli Niinisto called it a “historic day.” Russia says the change in policy is in response to the invasion of Ukraine. NATO foreign ministers say they want a speedy accession process in Finland. Sweden may also announce plans to join as soon as Monday. Finland borders 1,300 km (810 miles) with Russia.
