More than 5 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States, and skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
Fontaine Glen talked to a local doctor about how to protect your skin.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and UPMC Hamot plastic surgeons warn everyone to be aware of the risk of overexposure to the skin.
One way to protect your skin is to avoid peak hours from 10am to 2pm and wear SPF clothing, long sleeves and a hat. Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply sunscreen after a few hours. If you are near the water, reapply sunscreen more often.
Skin cancer is increasing locally.
One UPMC Hamot plastic surgeon says he sees cases of skin cancer being treated daily in his office. Although skin cancer is highly preventable, it is also the most common type of cancer diagnosed. However, in most cases it is very treatable.
“What you have to be careful about is whether there are changing moles or areas where otherwise healthy people do not seem to heal over a period of time. It certainly does make you stand up and pay attention. It must be something that should be done, “said Dr. Jay Kang, chairman of UPMC Hamot’s Department of Surgery.
In 2021, 106,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma. About 72,000 people have died.
Many cases of melanoma appear as benign dark lesions on the skin, are ignored, and become silent killer.
