Monkeypox: Argentina confirms the first case of monkeypox in Latin America
According to local reports, the patient is a 40-year-old man who recently returned home. SpainTwo days ago, the government reported 59 cases.
“The PCR test results for the first suspected case of monkeypox are positive,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
According to the statement, the health care worker is treating the patient’s symptoms and his asymptomatic close contact is being monitored.
The Ministry of Health also revealed that it is a resident of Spain who is currently visiting Argentina and has nothing to do with other patients.
“The person has ulcerative lesions without other associated symptoms,” the ministry said.
Monkeypox is derived from an infectious virus and can be transmitted to humans by infected animals. Human-to-human transmission is possible, but rare.
Monkeypox is associated with smallpox, but it is less serious.
Early symptoms include high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a chickenpox-like rash.
There is no specific cure, but vaccination against smallpox has been found to be about 85% effective in preventing monkeypox.
Monkeypox was first detected Democratic Republic of the Congo It occurred in 1970 and is considered endemic in about 12 African countries.
Its appearance in non-epidemic countries is worrisome to experts, but those cases reported so far have been mostly mild and have not died.
