A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan, killing at least 255 people, according to the country’s official news agency.

The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning local time and was centered near the town of Khost, south of the capital, Kabul.

At least 255 people were killed and 155 injured in Barmalah, Ziruk, Wonka and Jayan districts of Paktika province, the Afghan Bakhtar News Agency reported Wednesday morning. Rescue teams were transported by helicopter to the affected areas.

“Long and strong tremors” were felt in Kabul 200 kilometers away, according to a resident posted on the website of the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

Mohammad Naseem Haqqani, head of the disaster management authority of the Taliban administration, said deaths were also reported in the eastern provinces of Khost and Nangarhar.

Bakhtar said local officials fear the death toll will rise if the central government does not provide emergency assistance.

“A severe earthquake shook four districts of Paktika Province, killing and wounding hundreds of our compatriots and destroying dozens of homes,” Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Taliban government, wrote on Twitter. “We urge all relief agencies to immediately send teams to the area to prevent further disaster.”

The Meteorological Department of neighboring Pakistan estimated the quake with a magnitude of 6.1. The quake was felt in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, and elsewhere in the eastern Punjab province.

The European Center for Mediterranean Seismology said a tremor was felt in Pakistan to the east of the epicenter.
