This normally harmless virus can cause central nervous system diseases, brain tumors: research
New Delhi : A virus that is widespread in humans can cause diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) and brain tumors, a study by scientists at IITIndore found.
The Ministry of Science and Technology claimed on Monday that the cancer-causing virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) could infect nerve cells and cause both of these types of illness.
Scientists have worked on the Ministry of Technology’s (DST) Science and Technology Infrastructure Improvement Fund (FIST) scheme to investigate the potential effects of carcinogenic EBV on brain cells.
This study, published in the latest issue of ACS Chemical Neuroscience, shows that timely and gradual changes can occur in nerve cells under the influence of the virus. Scientists have used Raman microspectroscopy, a simple and cost-effective tool for finding sensitive chemical changes in biological samples.
“EBV is known to be widespread in the population. It usually does no harm, but under abnormal conditions such as immunological stress and immune capacity, the virus is reactivated in the body. In addition, it can lead to a variety of complications, including a type of blood cancer called Burkitt lymphoma, gastric cancer, and multiple sclerosis, “said the government.
“Research work helps us understand EBV-mediated biomolecular changes in different compartments of the central nervous system, leading to a better understanding of nervous system disorders,” said IIT Indore, team leader in the Infectious Bioengineering Group. Dr. Hem Chandra Jha said. ..
Previous studies have provided links to the involvement of EBV in various neurodegenerative diseases, according to experts. However, it remains to be seen how the virus affects cells in the brain and can manipulate them.
