Seventeen days after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Luoding County in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, Gan Yu was found on Wednesday, a hero who stayed at a hydroelectric power station with his colleague, preventing downstream villages from submerging.

His vital signs were stable and in good mental condition when he was found by a local villager, CNR reported.

On September 5 when the earthquake struck Luoding, Lu Yong, an employee of the Wandong Hydropower Station, chose not to escape and climbed the dam to open two gates to release the surging water, saving the lives of hundreds of villagers.

Lu was rescued by helicopter on September 8, but his teammate, Gan, remained on the mountain waiting to be rescued due to a lack of physical strength.

Lu told CNR that when the quake hit, Jean helped rescue some of the injured.

After everyone at the hydroelectric plant ran away, they suddenly remembered that the generator had not been turned off – a great danger – so they hurried to close all the switches.

Lu told Cover News that he and Gan stayed at the hydropower plant that day without getting food.

The next day, the couple decided to try to save themselves and go out together. Gann, who was extremely short-sighted, lost his glasses during the earthquake and found it difficult to find ways. The two decided that Gan should stay where he was, and Luo would try to get help.

Lu said that before he separated from Jean, he found a pile of dry moss and bamboo leaves to help Jean stay warm. He also left a small amount of wild fruit, bamboo shoots and other foods.

Lu also created a temporary shelter for Gan, but Gan was no longer there when the rescue team arrived. A villager finally found Gan on Wednesday. Local rescue forces are assembled to transport Jean down the mountain.
