The earthquake that struck North Korea was probably natural South Korea Agency

SEOUL (Reuters) – A small earthquake early on Saturday near North Korea’s known nuclear test site was likely to be a natural one, South Korea’s meteorological agency said, amid growing concerns that Pyongyang may conduct a nuclear test.

South Korea’s meteorological department said a 2.5-magnitude earthquake shook the northeastern region of North Korea’s nuclear test site at 2:54 a.m. local time (1754 GMT Friday).

“It has been assessed as a natural earthquake,” the agency said in an advisory report. The depth of the tremor was 23 kilometers (14.3 miles).

The area is the site of small earthquakes earlier in the year which analysts said was due to geological instability caused by activities at the test site.

Officials in Seoul and Washington said North Korea is believed to have completed preparations for a seventh nuclear test at the Punggye-ri test site, which would be its first since 2017.

South Korean lawmakers said last week, citing the Korean intelligence agency that briefed them, that the possible window for its implementation could be between October 16 and November 7. But Defense Minister Lee Jong Sob said it is difficult to predict when North Korea will conduct a new test.

South Korea and the United States are conducting joint naval exercises involving a US aircraft carrier this week after North Korea launched a series of ballistic missiles including a medium-range ballistic missile over Japan on Tuesday.
