Local agencies prepare to conduct earthquake drills around the world in Santa Barbara County

SANTA BARBARA, CA – Local agencies across Santa Barbara County are preparing for a worldwide earthquake drill scheduled this week.

Some of these participating agencies include Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, the Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management.

Anthony Rodriguez is an Operations and Disaster Services Specialist at Foodbank in Santa Barbara.

He shares how agencies are preparing for the training, as millions of people will be taking part in global exercises at 10:20 a.m. this Thursday.

He says activities will include doing drills and exercises, and practicing the earthquake safety steps of “falling, covering and waiting” as if you were experiencing a major earthquake.

The exercises are based on an earthquake scenario that could affect the area if it were to actually occur.

Vibration drills are an opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness.

Other representatives, including Sivani Babi of the Red Cross and Stacey Silva of the County’s Office of Emergency Management, will also share their plans ahead of the Great ShakeOut training.
