SEOUL, Oct. 29 (Yonhap) — A 4.1-magnitude earthquake rocked central South Korea’s Gyesan Province on Saturday, the Meteorological Agency said. No injuries or damages were reported so far.

The quake occurred in Gangyeon Village, northeast of Goesan in North Chungcheong Province, at 8:27 a.m. with an estimated depth of 12 kilometers, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

The KMA initially declared the measured strength of the earthquake at 4.3, but later revised it to 4.1.

It is the most powerful earthquake to hit the Korean Peninsula this year and the 38th largest earthquake ever in the country. It was also the strongest earthquake after a 4.9-magnitude quake struck the waters off Seogwipo on the southern resort island of Jeju on December 14 last year.

The 4.1-magnitude earthquake was preceded by three foreshadowing tremors of 1.6, 1.3 and 3.5 on the Richter scale, minutes before the largest quake was reported, according to the Kuwait News Agency (KMA). She added that 12 aftershocks had been reported as of 10 am.

According to officials, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5 was apparently observed throughout the province.

The Kuwait News Agency (KMA) said the quake appeared to have been caused by a slip fault moving in the direction of northeast, southwest or east, southeast, west and northwest. A putter slip fault refers to a fault that usually moves horizontally.

The Central Disaster Management Headquarters said it had not yet received any reports of damage or injuries while the National Fire Agency said it had received 168 reports nationwide from callers who felt or asked about tremors.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said there were no safety problems at the country’s nuclear reactors due to the earthquake.

She added that the Hanaro research reactor, located 69 kilometers from the epicenter and the closest nuclear facility to it, did not detect seismic activity strong enough to issue a warning.

But in such neighboring cities of Cheongju and Cheongju, some citizens hurriedly fled to safety outside their homes after experiencing relatively large tremors.

“I heard the sound of a bomb explosion and the house shook severely,” a resident of Gwisan told Yonhap News Agency. “Although the furniture didn’t fall off, it was the first time in my life that I had a major shock from an earthquake.”

The tremors were apparently felt even from Seoul, 110 kilometers from Goisan, where some citizens reported to the fire authorities that they felt the earthquake for about two seconds.

President Yoon Seok-yeol’s spokesman said in a written press briefing that President Yoon Seok-yeol has instructed all government offices related to disaster management affairs to assess potential damage from earthquakes, including any disruptions to infrastructure facilities such as electricity and communications.

Including the most recent earthquake, the country has hit 61 earthquakes of magnitude 2 or higher since the beginning of the year, most of which were less than moderate magnitude 3.

The largest reported earthquake was within a 50-kilometre radius of the Saturday epicenter since 1978 with a magnitude of 5.2 in September of that year.
