An earthquake hits the Indonesian island of Java, killing at least 14 people

An earthquake rocked Indonesia’s main island of Java on Monday, killing at least 14 people, damaging dozens of buildings and sending residents onto the streets of the capital, seeking safety.

The US Geological Survey said the 5.6-magnitude quake was centered in Cianjur district in West Java province, at a depth of 10 km.

Suharyanto, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the attack killed at least 14 people and wounded 17 others. The agency said dozens of buildings were damaged, including an Islamic boarding school, a hospital and other public facilities.

It added in a statement that information was still being collected on the extent of losses and damages.

The earthquake was felt strongly in the Greater Jakarta area. High-rises in the capital have declined and some have been evacuated.

“I felt that the earthquake was very strong. My colleagues and I decided to get out of our office on the ninth floor using the emergency stairs,” said Vidi Premadhania, an employee in South Jakarta.

Earthquakes occur frequently throughout the sprawling archipelago, but it is not uncommon to feel them in Jakarta.

The country of more than 270 million people is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

The earthquake struck the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, for several seconds on Monday, the weather and geophysics agency said.

Reuters witnesses said some people vacated offices in central Jakarta’s business district, while others reported feeling buildings shaking and seeing furniture moving.

Mochlis, who was in Cianjur when the quake struck, said he felt a “strong tremor” and the walls and ceiling of his office building were damaged.

“I am very shocked. I am afraid there will be another earthquake,” Mochlis told Metro TV news channel, adding that people fled their homes and some fainted and vomited because of the strong tremors.

BMKG Chairman Dwikorita Karnawati, speaking to reporters at Parliament House, advised people to stay outdoors in case of aftershocks.

BMKG’s Soko Prayitno Ade said authorities were checking the extent of the damage from the quake.
