SK Telecom to use the network to detect earthquakes

SK Telecom announced that it will build a seismic detection system that requires the installation of sensors at its base stations to allow the sharing of seismic data with authorities faster.

The company said that the South Korean telecommunications company will work together with the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), the country’s weather service, and Kyungpook National University to develop the system.

It added that the system is expected to be completed by 2021.

SK Telecom aims to install around 8,000 sensors nationwide to expand base stations to also be in schools, police stations and its retail stores. The telecom company said that these sensors would be a small 220-volt plug that can detect hundreds of vibrations per second.

The data collected from these sensors will be shared with the KMA, which will compare and merge this data with its own data collected from 338 seismic centers across the country.

KMA can now send warnings of 7 to 25 seconds after an earthquake is detected. With the new seismic detection system, the hope is that the data collected by SK Telecom will shorten this response time and improve how it measures the intensity of these earthquakes.

The agency said that last year, 88 earthquakes of 2 magnitude struck the Korean peninsula.

This raised concerns, the agency said, as this number is above the average of nearly 70 earthquakes that occur annually from 1999 to 2018.

SK Telecom, along with its rival KT, launched its IoT networks in 2016.

IoT sensors have also been deployed in South Korea to protect cultural heritage and water meters.
