Turkey earthquake: a two-month-old baby found alive under the rubble 128 hours after the deadly disaster

Nearly five days after the deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, a two-month-old baby was rescued from the rubble in the Turkish city of Hatay on Saturday.

“The child survived the fatal disaster and was immediately taken to the hospital for medical examinations,” Anadolu Agency wrote on Twitter.

The death toll in Turkey and Syria has now reached more than 28,000 after Monday’s deadly earthquake. Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said that at least 24,617 people were killed in the deadly earthquakes that hit southeastern Turkey.

While more than 3,500 people were killed in Syria.

Amidst this devastating situation, rescue teams from around the world continue to save as many lives as possible.

On Saturday, rescuers pulled out a pregnant woman and her brother who had been trapped inside the rubble of a collapsed building for 140 hours. Asma Sultan, 13, was pulled from the rubble in Gaziantep by rescue teams more than 140 hours after the earthquakes struck.

Seven-month-old baby Hamza was also rescued in Hatay more than 140 hours after the earthquake.

Meanwhile, UN Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria will “double or more” than its current level of 28,000.

The United Nations earlier warned that at least 870,000 people are in urgent need of hot meals across Turkey and Syria.

The World Health Organization said that nearly 26 million people were affected by the earthquake. It launched an urgent appeal for $42.8 million to meet urgent health needs.

Turkey’s Disaster Mitigation Agency reported on Saturday that nearly 32,000 Turkish citizens are assisting in search and rescue operations. There are also 8,294 international rescuers.
