Dermatologists say UV lamps may pose skin cancer risk
Brownsville, Texas (Valley Central) — things like gel nail polish, acrylic sets, or shellac nails need some sort of light lamp to speed up the drying process, and that’s the dangerous part.
Studies have shown that the risk of developing some form of skin cancer from exposure to these lamps is low, but any type of exposure can have long-term effects.FDA recommends removing perfumes, cosmetics, and some skin care products to avoid reactions to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Some nail polishes may contain certain ingredients that can irritate your skin, especially if it’s under a UV lamp.
“Unfortunately, long-term exposure to UVA radiation has been shown to cause signs of aging and skin cancer,” says board-certified dermatologist Maria Villegas, PhD. Even if you do, it raised concerns about whether you’re at risk of getting skin cancer while getting a manicure, right?
Villegas says people who trim their nails every two months have a lower risk of developing skin cancer than those who trim their nails once every two weeks.

“The sunscreen should work to protect your skin from these UV lamps and should be a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher,” Villegas said. If you’ve ever been to a nail salon, you have to wash your hands often, and you should pretty much bring sunscreen so you know when to apply it at the salon.”
Another way to protect your skin is to wear UV protective gloves designed for manicures. They look like regular gloves, but the fingertips are exposed.
