Black people are less likely to be prescribed dementia drugs
March 10, 2023 – Black people diagnosed with dementia are significantly less likely than white people to be prescribed medication for the disease, according to new research.
Prescription rates for five drugs commonly used to treat dementia were 19 percent lower among blacks than among whites.
“Previous research has shown that people with dementia do not always have the same access to potentially beneficial medications in nursing homes and hospitals, due to racial disparities,” said New York’s New Yorker. - The rate was 16 points lower for SSRIs, which are antidepressants.
- For antipsychotics, which treat psychosis and disconnection from reality, the rate was 4 percentage points lower.
- For benzodiazepines, which treat anxiety and agitation, the rate was 19 points lower.
Differences persisted after people’s age, gender, and insurance type were factored into the analysis.
Researchers found that black patients were more likely to be referred to a specialist than white patients. When a black man was seen by a neurologist, they prescribed him two drugs in the same proportions as whites. These two types were cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA antagonists. The researchers wrote that more referrals to specialists, such as neurologists, could help reduce prescribing differences.
