NHS Covid-19 App ends on 27th April

The NHS Covid-19 app, which had instructed people to self-isolate if they have been in close contact with someone with Covid, will be closed on Thursday 27 April.according to Research published in Nature, the app averted about 1 million cases in its first year. This equates to approximately 44,000 hospitalization cases and her 9,600 deaths.

Zühlke helped develop the app in just 12 weeks, and the technology has quickly become a digital mainstay in the UK during the pandemic. A Swiss-based technology consultancy and engineering firm has found a way to monitor his Covid contacts using the phone’s Bluetooth capabilities.

The app has been downloaded about 30 million times, but its usage declined once the restrictions were lifted. In February 2022, the UK government announced the end of the legal requirement to self-isolate in case of a positive test result, and announced the closure of the app in March 2023.

“The number of people actively using the NHS COVID-19 app has declined steadily since July 2021, since access to government-funded testing ended for most people. As a result, fewer positive test results were entered into the app, and as a result fewer notifications were sent to close contacts,” GOV.UK said in a statement.

The study, led by Michelle Kendall of the University of Warwick, is important epidemiological evidence supporting the government’s decision to encourage app downloads amid data privacy concerns.
