Rabies cases surge in western NB
New Brunswick has the highest number of rabies cases in the state since 2017.
As of 2023, there have been six confirmed cases of rabies, all of them in raccoons, according to state statistics. Since November 2022, two people who came in contact with the two raccoons have had to be treated for rabies, according to a state news release.

In a news release, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture announced that aircraft will drop more than 340,000 animal vaccination baits in the area from Aug. 12 to 18 as part of an annual prevention programme.
Vaccination diets come in green blister packs with descriptive labels. The release says people should leave the pack alone when they see it.
“Anyone who picks up the packet should wash their hands thoroughly and anyone who eats the contents of the packet should seek medical attention,” the release reads.
There were no rabies cases in 2021, but two in 2022 and 11 in 2017, according to the New Brunswick Veterinary Association.
In addition to the airdrops, the ministry said 14,000 vaccination baits will be hand-distributed by the end of July.
“We are urging the public to call Telecare 811 if they see a raccoon, skunk or fox that looks sick and may have rabies,” the release said.
