COVID-19 and opioid, two merging epidemics | Opinion
Many suffer from stress, anxiety, unemployment, and financial anxiety during this period of social isolation. Among all of these, the epidemic of opioids is getting worse in many parts of the country. In many states, opioid-related overdose has significantly increased the number of EMS responses. Lockdowns and closures made it difficult for opioid addicts to access help. Unfortunately, many opioid users have to deal with it themselves. A study published by Well Being Trust and Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care predicts an additional 75,000 deaths from alcohol and drug abuse and suicide from pandemics.
According to the CDC, overdose of opioids killed nearly 47,000 people in 2018, with 32% of those deaths related to prescription opioids. Millions of Americans are prescribed opioid drugs, and approximately 21-29% of patients are prescribed opioids for chronic pain. The average American struggles during this outbreak is a hotbed of substance abuse. Also, depending on how opioids affect the respiratory system, the risk of coronavirus infection in opioid users increases. Some health officials fear that the COVID-19 pandemic could exacerbate the opioid epidemic.
Opioid poisoning is devastating and requires treatment by millions of Americans. Unfortunately, mitigation continues to be the universal solution to opioid addiction. However, the current risks are realistic due to the potential increase in people suffering from opioid addiction. Treatment providers and rehabilitation centers across the country may see an influx of patients in need. COVID-19 is another issue that drug users and therapists must recognize. Perhaps this is a time when we focus on complete rehabilitation and help opioid users to be completely drug-free, healthy and calm.
Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that the lower the number of people who are dependent or addicted to opioid, opioid, or maintenance drugs, would help reduce risk? It’s the crazy world we live in now. This year we tested all Americans and their ability to overcome obstacles. Perhaps it is not unreasonable to believe that opioid addicts are drug-free, become sober and healthy, and do not have to rely on drugs to maintain it. As the pandemic subsides, this is a new approach we see, with more attention and resources being devoted to drinking and potentially remaining healthy and drug-free. These two issues have been merged and it is clear that treatment of opioid poisoning will require some changes.
