The FDA is warning against unapproved “fat dissolving” injections.
On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration said it had received reports of people suffering from side effects after using unauthorized treatments.
The side effects included severe infections, skin deformities and persistent scarring.
“FDA has received reports about consumers who experienced adverse reactions such as permanent scars, serious infections, skin deformities, cysts, and deep, painful knots after receiving unapproved fat-dissolving injections,” the FDA wrote on their website.
They added that some consumers had received the injections via clinics or med spas, while others had purchased the “fat-dissolving drugs online and injected the drugs themselves.”

Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) and sodium deoxycholate (DC) are common ingredients used in these injections, although they have not being approved by the FDA for this purpose.
Sold under the names Aqualyx, Lipodissolve, Lipo Lab and Kabelline, the injections are used to reduce fat in thighs, upper arms, stomach and chin.
According to the FDA, the injections work by providing a nonsurgical route to breaking down fat cells around the injection sites after a series of shots.
Kybella, which is deoxycholic acid, is the only fat-dissolving prescription drug that has been approved by the FDA, meaning its quality, safety and effectiveness have been evaluated.
However, the drug has only been approved to be used under the chin and it must be administered by a health care professional.
But these injections should only be performed by medical professionals — and should only be approved versions.
The “patient might not know what they’re injecting into,” Dr. Dan Maselli said per NBC News. “They might think it’s fat tissue.”
“It could be a muscle tissue,” he added. “ It could be your blood vessel, or it could be around a nerve.”
