7 March 2024 – Sudan's participation in the Malaria Ministerial Conference to be held in Yaounde, Cameroon on 6 March 2024 confirms Sudan's strong political commitment to prioritize malaria control. Sudan was represented at the event by a delegation of Federal Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Awadalla, Dr. Kansa Elsoni from the National Malaria Control Program and Mr. Hamza Sami from the Integrated Vector Control Department.
To accelerate progress on malaria control and translate stated political commitments into concrete actions, Sudan adopted the WHO initiative High Burden-High-Impact (HBHI) approach in April 2022. Sudan is the first country in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. Follow this approach.
The HBHI approach allows countries most affected by malaria to reach the groups and regions most vulnerable to malaria. This will be achieved by adapting interventions to the needs of each region, based on the best available data and the national disease situation. This allows for the most efficient use of resources to achieve the desired effects and achieve planned malaria control results.
The most important pillar of the HBHI approach is a strong commitment to prioritizing malaria on the political agenda. Since Sudan adopted this approach, the Federal Ministry of Health has led all efforts to provide the necessary resources and support to implement the malaria control strategy. The research is being led by the National Malaria Control Program and Integrated Vector Control Division.
The Malaria Ministerial Conference brought together most of the malaria stakeholders and donors involved in eliminating malaria on the African continent. They met to assess progress, consider ways to address challenges, and reach collective agreement on key measures to address malaria mortality. It also called for increased political and financial engagement of participating countries to accelerate efforts to achieve the goals of the Global Technology Strategy against Malaria by 2030.
The Federal Minister of Health took part in the event despite the ongoing war in Sudan, various competing priorities and the difficult conditions associated with traveling outside Sudan at this time. His presence demonstrates Sudan's commitment to reducing the burden of malaria and strengthens the country's long-standing role in regional efforts to combat malaria.
