Two north suburban men cycle across country to raise awareness for Parkinson's disease – NBC Chicago
Two men from suburban Chicago are on a mission to raise awareness about Parkinson's disease by biking across the United States.
“We'll be riding about 70 miles a day, for a total of 4,000 miles, and will finish in sunny San Diego on July 3rd,” said Bill Bucklew, one of the cyclists from Wilmette.
Kevin Murray, a Cary native, is the team's mechanic and RV driver.
“I'm going to help tune up the bike and make sure everything is working fine,” Murray said.
The two became friends after being diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's disease.
“I was diagnosed in 2012,” Bucklew said.
Bucklew, 55, is battling the neurodegenerative disease the best way he knows how.
“We know that exercise is the only way to slow the progression of the disease,” Bucklew says.
Daniel Corcos is an exercise neuroscientist at Northwestern University who has met with Bucklew several times and supports his mission.
“He has a drive and an energy that very few people can match,” Korcos said.
Kokos is currently researching the effects of exercise on Parkinson's disease.
“There is now compelling evidence that continued high-intensity exercise can slow the progression of the disease,” Korkos said.
That's what motivated Bill to complete 11 triathlons and 44 marathons.
He has also walked across the US and UK spreading messages of movement and hope.
Murray also accompanied him on the trip to England.
“They just pulled up their wallet and before they knew it there was £100. We didn't ask for money, we just told them about the illness and they just wanted to help. People say, oh, my grandfather had that, my uncle had that, my aunt had that,” Murray said.
For Bucklew, this latest challenge was inevitable.
“I started thinking about you, I used to walk and now I have a little difficulty running. We try to meet people and raise awareness of things that can help their lifestyle,” Bucklew said.
Bucklew will ride a specially designed tricycle lent to him by Olympic cyclist Davis Phinney.
Finney also has Parkinson's disease and supports Bill's mission, he says.Long ride.”
Donations collected along the bike route will be divided equally between the Davis Finney Foundation and Team Fox of the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
