Creating a space that keeps mosquitoes away this summer
- Iberia Parish Mosquito Control Teams are celebrating National Mosquito Control Week by raising awareness to protect ourselves from mosquito-borne diseases.
- The team also wants to share some advice on keeping mosquitoes out of your home as much as possible.

“Unfortunately, I delayed giving my dog the preventative treatment she needed,” Iberia Parish biologist David Martin told KATC. “And sure enough, she had canine heartworm disease, and I a lot Of money.”

“Eastern equine encephalitis, also known as 'Triple E,' is extremely deadly to humans,” Martin said. The human mortality rate from this particular mosquito-borne disease is 30 percent.
“I went to a conference a few years ago and there was a presentation by a guy whose daughter actually contracted eastern equine encephalitis and died. But before she died, she suffered terribly. He had to watch his daughter slowly die from this mosquito-borne disease.”
But Martin said that while “Triple E” is “very rare in this area”, there are still small things people can do to make their spaces mosquito-free.
“They can breed wherever there's water,” Martin said.
“As a homeowner, you need to walk through your yard two to three times a week and remove standing water,” Pellerin said. A 16-ounce cold drink bottle cap, filled with water, is all a female mosquito needs to lay her eggs. We recommend wearing light-colored clothing, long sleeves and long pants, and we also recommend using mosquito repellent. DEET Always read the label before use. This year, Gov. Jeff Landry and Parish President M. Larry Richard proclaimed June 16-21 as National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. The American Mosquito Control Association, Iberia Parish Mosquito Control District, Louisiana Mosquito Control Association and CDC are using the week to remind citizens to protect themselves from mosquito bites and mosquito-borne diseases.
Here is a list of guidelines recommended by the CDC:
- Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil according to label directions.
- Use insect repellent on children who are sensitive to insect bites and cover exposed skin. Many preparations designed for adults as well as children are available in drug stores and in the camping section of your local store.
- Wear light-colored clothing with long sleeves and long pants when you are outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Avoid wearing perfume or cologne when you are outdoors for long periods of time.
- Drain: Remove all objects that may pool water near your home (cans, barrels, planters, tires, containers, tarps, etc.).
- Keep all pools, spas, birdbaths, ponds and fountains clean and free of debris.
- Keep doors and window screens tightly closed.
- Do not feed in storm drains. Sweep lawn clippings, leaves, and tree branches from sidewalks and driveways.
