Skin cancer cases on the rise nationwide, prevention tips
DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – There's still plenty of time to get outside and enjoy your favorite activities this summer, but it's important to do so safely.
“We've seen an increase in skin cancer across all age groups in this region over the last few decades,” said Dr. Connor Weir, a physician at Southeast Health Medical Center.
This claim is backed up by statistics: According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with 20% of people reporting experiencing skin cancer by age 70.
This is quite common, but there are many ways to prevent it.
“If you're going to be outside for an extended period of time, wearing sunscreen and sunglasses or protective clothing is the best way to prevent sunburn,” Dr Weir said.
Denise Worthington is one of many people who have experienced skin cancer. Luckily, she was able to detect it early and get treatment, but doctors say it was caused by not protecting her skin as a child.
“That comes from unprotected exposure to the sun at a young age,” Worthington said, “so I would really urge the younger generation to wear sunscreen.”
A common misconception Dr. Weir hears is that people assume that once you remove the tumor, you're good to go, but that's far from the truth.
“It's just one spot, so it's not a big deal – you don't need to be as careful, you don't need to wear sunscreen,” Dr Weir says, “but actually, you really do need to, and if you've had one spot before, you're at higher risk of having another.”
The sun isn't the only culprit: tanning beds provide more radiation and direct exposure than the sun.
Dr Weir recommends checking yourself frequently for abnormalities and seeing a doctor if anything abnormal is detected, as early detection makes it easier to treat.
