5.6 magnitude earthquake hits northern Moluccas Sea in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A tectonic earthquake struck the northern coast of Batang Dua Island in Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia at 06:39 a.m. today. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake parameters have been updated to 5.4 on the Richter scale.

“The modelling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami,” he added.

Based on the location of the epicenter and the depth of the epicenter, Daryono said the earthquake was of the shallow type due to shallow rock deformation activity on the Sea of ​​Kings plate.

“The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake had an upward motion or thrust fault mechanism,” Daryono said.

By 07:10 Jakarta time, Daryono said the Meteorology and Environment Agency's monitoring results had not detected any aftershock activity.
