Field Hockey Announces 2024 Fall Schedule
PISCATAWAY, NJ Rutgers field hockey has announced its schedule for the upcoming season. After two practice games in mid-August, the Scarlet Knights will begin the upcoming season on Sunday, September 1.
In non-conference play, the Scarlet Knights host Vermont, UConn, St. Joe's, Miami (Ohio) and Princeton. RU travels to Monmouth and UMass Lowell.
The Big Ten opener is Sept. 27 when RU hosts Iowa. In conference play, Rutgers hosts Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State. The Scarlet Knights travel to Maryland, Northwestern, Indiana and Michigan.
The 2024 Big Ten Tournament will be held in College Park, Maryland. Hosted by the University of Maryland, the event begins on November 7.
Rutgers will face 11 opponents this season that the Scarlet Knights faced during the program’s 16-win streak last season. In addition to the Big Ten slate, Princeton, UConn and Monmouth remain on the schedule. RU will face Princeton for the seventh time since 2017, UConn for the sixth time since 2018 and Monmouth for the fifth time since 2019. New additions to the schedule this season that RU didn’t face last year include Vermont (first meeting since 2013), St. Joe’s (seventh meeting since 2016), Miami (Ohio) (first meeting since 2015) and UMass Lowell (first meeting ever).
The Big Ten Conference schedule is an annual challenge. Last season, RU was one of four Big Ten schools to reach the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, seven Big Ten schools were ranked in the top 16 of the final coaches poll of the season. Rutgers’ season slate includes a total of 10 teams that were nationally ranked in at least one poll last season, along with MAC Tournament champion Miami (Ohio).
Rutgers is coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history. RU began the season on a 15-game winning streak, the last undefeated team in Division I field hockey. The Scarlet Knights went 6-2 in the conference, tying the program’s best league finish ever. Rutgers would earn an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament, its fifth appearance in program history and third in the past six seasons. The team has been well-recognized for its individuals, with a program-record six all-region selections. Five of those All-Region players (Puck Winter, Willem Causarano, Ava Cickavage And Paulina Niklaus) will return this season.
After a 16-game winning streak, the second-most in a single season in program history, with victories over eight ranked opponents, RU enters the upcoming season well-positioned to continue its remarkable run of recent success. The Scarlet Knights have won 43 of their last 61 games over the past three seasons and will look to continue that success in the upcoming 2024 campaign.
