NUS Hydrogen Innovation Centre opens state-of-the-art facility

NUS Hydrogen Innovation Centre opens state-of-the-art facility

To power Singapore's national hydrogen strategy, the National University of Singapore (NUS) today opened its flagship innovation hub, an advanced research facility, and officially opened the Hydrogen Innovation Centre (CHI). Covering over 600 square metres and equipped with cutting-edge research equipment, the new facility aims to accelerate hydrogen research and commercial applications in Singapore.

CHI's opening ceremony was officiated by Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, in the presence of distinguished guests from Singapore's hydrogen research and industry ecosystem.

CHI was established as a virtual centre in July 2022 with an investment of S$25 million, including a S$15 million donation from Temasek and additional funding from NUS. The centre adopts a holistic approach to address the technical and infrastructural challenges of realising a hydrogen economy, drawing on a wide range of expertise, including science and engineering, from various organisations at NUS. Research activities at CHI are organised around four key areas: green hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogen carrier systems and hydrogen utilisation.

Over the past two years, CHI has provided grants of over S$4.2 million to support 17 innovative projects in hydrogen-related research, and the Centre has also been very successful in securing external grants, one of which is a S$8 million grant recently awarded to CHI under the Low Carbon Energy Research Programme to conduct research into ammonia combustion.

NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chee said, “NUS strives to drive change and shape a more sustainable future across our core mission areas of education, research, innovation, and operations and governance. The opening of the Hydrogen Innovation Centre represents a bold and important step taken by NUS towards building a sustainable future. The Centre is off to a good start and we look forward to contributing to knowledge building, Singapore's climate target of net-zero emissions by 2050, and the global fight against climate change.”

Russell Tam, head of emerging technologies at Temasek, said: “Tackling today's complex sustainability challenges requires a comprehensive, whole-system approach and diverse stakeholder collaboration. Combining sustained STEM-based research and development, tech-savvy entrepreneurs and investors, global and cross-sector partnerships and diverse public and private capital with risk tolerance and stamina can foster a vibrant deep-tech innovation ecosystem. As co-founders of the Hydrogen Innovation Centre with NUS, we are committed to leveraging our capabilities and network to support the advancement of low-carbon hydrogen technologies to enhance the pathway to wider adoption.”

CHI's new research facility will be the home for the center's cutting-edge research while strengthening its education and industry collaboration efforts. State-of-the-art equipment at the facility will include a four-channel reactor for carbon dioxide hydrogenation; a catalyst synthesis robot that automates the process of creating catalysts needed for hydrogen-related research; prototyping, testing and characterization tools; and a section dedicated to scientific research on ammonia, which requires special handling and storage precautions.

Pushing the boundaries of hydrogen research

To further strengthen Singapore's research infrastructure for the future hydrogen economy, CHI has selected eight promising projects for potential funding. These projects span two broad areas: disruptive research to achieve breakthroughs in hydrogen technology, and creating market-driven prototypes that pave the way for the commercialisation of innovative hydrogen technologies.

See the Appendix for some of these interesting projects.

Building a strong talent pool for a vibrant hydrogen economy

CHI plans to further expand Singapore's talent pool of hydrogen experts. The centre will employ around 10 polymaths with multidisciplinary expertise and train 10 PhD students to enhance its research capabilities, strengthening CHI's current team of 32 principal investigators and four PhD students. CHI will also introduce a course in hydrogen technologies to prepare learners for the future hydrogen economy.

To raise public awareness of the benefits of hydrogen energy, CHI recently held the Hydrogen Innovation Challenge, in which student teams created Instagram Reels to portray their vision for Singapore's hydrogen energy transition. The videos were then voted on by the public and reviewed by a panel of experts in the field, with the shortlisted teams then competing in a quiz. The three winning teams received their prizes at the official opening event today.

Partnering with industry to accelerate the transition to hydrogen

To advance the adoption of hydrogen technologies, CHI has been actively working with industry partners to leverage complementary strengths to accelerate innovation, efficiently scale technology, and address the complex challenges associated with hydrogen production, distribution, and utilization.

CHI works closely with 17 industry partners, ranging from global corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises. For example, CHI researchers are working with Siemens Energy to develop a new gas turbine technology that can use partially cracked ammonia as a feedstock. In another project, CHI researchers are working with Chevron to develop a direct electrocatalytic “liquid hydrogen carrier” production process.

CHI aims to further collaborate with industry and ultimately drive the transition to a more sustainable energy future.

Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
