We're in the middle of summer, but we're already bombarded with back-to-school announcements. To help prepare you for the new school year, we've got a comprehensive back-to-school health and safety guide for your children.

First, visit your child's doctor to make sure your child is up to date on all shots and vaccinations. While you're there, schedule a sports physical if your child will be joining a team this year. If possible, try to schedule these appointments in advance. For urgent matters, sports physicals are also available seven days a week at Urgent Care, with no appointment required.

Before school starts, remind your children about good hygiene practices like washing their hands and sneezing or coughing into the inside of their arm if tissues are unavailable. If your child has persistent head itching, check them closely for lice. Also, if they are unwell and show signs of fever, runny nose or cough, keep them home for a day to be safe. This will also help keep your whole class healthy.

A week before classes start, get your child's sleep habits consistent at school. Try enforcing a bedtime.
This system will ensure your child gets at least eight hours of sleep each night and cuts down on screen time, such as video games, TV, and even scrolling on their phone, an hour before bedtime.

Set your child up for success in the morning by giving them a balanced breakfast that incorporates at least four different food groups: carbohydrates, protein, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats like avocado and peanut butter. A balanced meal will help your child stay fuller longer, helping them stay focused and energized during the class.

Every child is different, so talk to your doctor at your next appointment to determine what your child's daily nutritional goals should be.

Finally, there are several ways your child can get to school: by school bus, by bicycle, or on foot. Discuss road safety: make sure your child stays a safe distance from the curb, doesn't bike or walk on the road, and above all else, stay aware of their surroundings. If someone else is picking up your child, come up with a safety word that you change regularly and help them remember emergency contact numbers.
