Fears grow as super strain of bird flu continues to spread in Australia : NPR
Australia fears a more contagious and deadly strain of bird flu could cause a major crisis for the country's poultry industry.

Major Australian supermarkets have been restricting egg sales to customers for months in the wake of unprecedented bird flu outbreaks. But as spring begins this weekend, a surge in another, more deadly strain of bird flu, the H5N1 virus, threatens to provoke a bigger crisis. Kristina Kukorja reports from Melbourne.
Kristina Kukorja: This isn't the first bird flu outbreak in Australia, but it is the biggest. Three strains of the virus were detected in May and spread quickly from wild birds to poultry in the country's southeastern states. Authorities say about 2 million chickens, or about 8% of the country's chicken population, have been culled, more than half of them on farms in Victoria state.
DANIEL CUCINOTTTA: Millions of birds can be culled overnight because of something that gives farmers little ability to protect their flocks.
KUKOLLYA: Egg farmer Daniel Cucinotta is vice-president of the Victorian Farmers Federation. He says it could take up to a year for affected farms to recover, and twice that long for egg supplies to bounce back. (inaudible) It happened on Australia's sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island. Among them is Dr. Louise Emerson, a government seabird ecologist who works with the Antarctic Program.
Louise Emerson: We're dealing with this uncertainty.
KUKORYA: She's one of the scientists monitoring migratory birds that could be carriers of the H5N1 virus.
Emerson: We know that some of these species migrate over the winter to areas where other birds are infected or have avian influenza outbreaks, but we don't know the conditions necessary for birds to become infected with influenza.
KUKOLYA: National Animal Disease Control Coordinator Dr. Brant Smith says the virus has spread with unprecedented speed across the Americas and Antarctica.
Brant Smith: Now that this virus has spread to dairy cows in the United States, we have to broaden our preparedness to the fact that it could potentially infect multiple species, not just the ones we've seen so far.
KUKOLLYA: He's concerned that Australia's wildlife will be affected on the same scale as other parts of the world.
