Pakistan risks sliding into particularism, says former PM Imran Khan

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has said Pakistan is in danger of sliding into particularism as political instability and terrorism have brought the economy to the brink of collapse.

The 71-year-old founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday (August 30, 2024) said that the country's fragile cash-strapped economy was the biggest challenge facing Pakistan, but intelligence agencies were busy targeting one political party.

Mr Khan said the party had been blamed for the recent wave of terrorism, but the government later claimed the terrorists were coming from across the border.

Mr Khan said the country was facing the risk of particularism and no one would invest in Pakistan as long as the country was suffering from terrorism, Dawn News reported.

As a federal party, PTI could tackle this grave situation as all other political parties were restricted to their regions, Mr Khan said after attending a court proceeding in connection with the National Accountability Bureau reference related to the Bvlgari jewellery set that Mr Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi allegedly withheld as gifts from Toshakhana at a throwaway price.

Mr Khan has been in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August in connection with several cases. He is currently facing more than 200 cases.

The government has accused him of being one of the masterminds of the May 9, 2023 riots, following his arrest in a corruption case in which dozens of military installations were vandalized and burned. The government intends to hold Mr. Khan's military trial during the May 9 events.
