Canary Weekly – Another earthquake was recorded in the Canary Islands, and was felt by residents of two islands

The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that they recorded a 3.8 magnitude earthquake near Frontera, on the island of El Hierro, last night (Thursday) at 8:34 p.m. at a depth of 29 kilometers. It was felt in various places in El Hierro, including Sabinoza and Valverde, as well as in parts of La Palma, such as El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane.

Although the earthquake was felt on two islands, its magnitude, measured at 2.0 and 3.0, did not pose any threat to residents or infrastructure, according to IGN.

Seismic activity in the Canary Islands

This latest earthquake comes after a period of increased seismic activity between September 7 and 12 (as shown in the image below), when the Canary Islands Seismic Network, run by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (INVOLCAN), recorded 39 earthquakes between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The strongest of these was a magnitude 3.1 earthquake.

The seismic activity is centered around Enmedio Volcano, an underwater mountain rising 470 meters above the sea floor, known for its seismic events recorded since the last century.

Although these tremors do not currently pose a significant risk, the ongoing seismic activity serves as a reminder of the region's dynamic geological nature.
