Geology Agency conducts study on fault that caused Bandung earthquake

Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) – The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has conducted another study on the active fault that caused a 5.0-magnitude earthquake in the Bandung area, West Java, on September 18.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Geological Engineering, Badjagaran University (Onbad).

The head of the Geological Survey Center of the Geological Agency, Eddy Salameto, said the study aims to determine the characteristics of the active fault in the area and mitigate potential earthquakes in the future.

“We hope the results of the study will be useful to society,” Salamito said Friday.

Salameto said his team continues to map active faults, including the one in the Kirtasari area.

“We are currently conducting active mapping at the district and city level, such as in Sukabumi, Cianjur, Garut, Bandung District, West Bandung, Sleman District, Bantul District, and Surabaya City,” he added.

He pointed out that mapping is one of the efforts made to mitigate and reduce the effects of future earthquakes and create better preparedness in society.

“Indonesia’s geological location is at the junction of three active tectonic plates, and it is prone to earthquakes. Therefore, mitigation of earthquakes must be carried out in a consistent and sustainable manner,” Salameto noted.

Earlier, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said an unmapped active fault caused the shallow quake in the Bandung area.

“At first, it was found that the earthquake came from the Garsila fault. After collecting mapping and aftershock data, it was found that the earthquake came from a fault that was not included on the map,” said Abdul Muhari, head of the Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center at the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

He pointed out that the Bandung earthquake was not caused by two parts of the Garsila fault or the Lembang fault.

“There are two sections of the Garsila fault. The distribution of the first earthquake and its aftershocks does not come from the Garsila fault nor from the Lembang fault,” he said.
