Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday saluted tribal icon Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary and said he sacrificed everything to protect the honor and glory of the motherland.
Born in 1875 in what is now Jharkhand, Munda had challenged British rule and is credited with mobilizing the tribes against the empire. He died in British custody aged 25.
“Bhagwan Birsa Munda ji sacrificed everything to protect the honor and glory of the motherland. My deepest respects to him on the occasion of his birth anniversary 'Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas',” PM Modi said in a message in hindi on X.
PM Modi also shared a video and audio montage of his tributes to Munda on several occasions.
Prime Minister Modi will visit Jamui in Bihar to commemorate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, marking the start of the 150th birth anniversary celebration of the tribal icon.
Prime Minister Modi also greeted people on the founding day of Jharkhand.
“Best wishes to all our brothers and sisters of Jharkhand on the occasion of the founding day of the state. This land, irrigated by the struggle and sacrifices of the tribal society, has always been the pride of the country. I wish May this state, full of natural resources, move forward at a rapid pace on the path of progress,” Prime Minister Modi said on X.
The state of Jharkhand officially came into existence on Munda's birth anniversary in 2000.
