1.3 magnitude earthquake reported in Stamford area: USGS

STAMFORD, Conn. — A 1.3 magnitude earthquake was reported late Monday morning in Stamford, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was reported at 11:55 a.m. at a depth of about 3 miles, the USGS website notes. The quake's coordinates show a location on Old Mill Lane, just south of Merritt Parkway.

Stamford Police Lt. Jerry Jones told Patch Monday afternoon that the department had not received any reports of injuries or damage related to the quake, although the department received calls around the time the quake was felt.

The Stamford Fire Department said the seismic event comes just days after Stamford residents reported hearing and feeling loud explosions in the North Stamford area that were powerful enough to shake homes and, in some cases, remove pictures from walls.

The Social Fund for Development said it received more than a dozen phone calls from residents on the night of November 14, and the sounds of the explosion were heard again in the early morning hours of November 15.

Firefighters combed the North Stamford area and found no damage related to the sounds.

In addition, both the Tennessee Gas Pipeline, which operates a major transmission line in the region, and Eversource Gas confirmed last week that their systems were operating normally with no irregularities reported, the SFD said.

It is not known whether Monday's earthquake is related.

While earthquakes are known to occur in various parts of Connecticut, the state is best known for its seismic activity near the town of Modus, according to the Northeastern Emergency Consortium.

It is worth noting that in 1791 an earthquake was recorded in Modus with a magnitude of between 4.4 and 5, NESEC said. The event was felt from New York City to Albany and even Boston in the Northeast.
