Wahiawa community takes precautions against bird flu
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Wahiawa Feed Store usually sells up to 100 nestlings, but the store owner stopped sales about a week ago following news that Hawaii was hit by bird flu for the first time. .
Susie's Duck Sanctuary is located near the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant. “It wipes them out and it doesn't just make some people sick, it makes them all sick enough to die quickly,” he added.
Kamahele sells nets that bird owners can use to enclose chicken coops and prevent wild birds from entering. He first used it to prevent palm beetles.
“I think the internet is just a good precaution to start, and as we learn more about it, we will be able to find solutions,” Kamahele said.
Susie's Duck Sanctuary told Hawaii News Now that soldiers at Schofield Barracks who volunteered with the nonprofit were contacted, tested and did not contract the virus.
Mililani Mauka Veterinary Clinic has signs in place at the Mililani Pet Fair on Nov. 2 to warn pet owners of possible exposure. Some of the ducks and geese from the reserve were on display there.
