Why have there already been 23 Missouri earthquakes in November?

This definitely caught my attention. It's normal for southern Missouri to experience more than 20 earthquakes a month thanks to the always active New Madrid Fault. I was very surprised to see that 23 earthquakes were felt in Missouri in just November, and we're not even close to the end of the month.

I check the USGS earthquake page every day and have noticed recently that almost every time I look there is another earthquake in New Madrid. I decided to query the USGS website and specifically ask it to show me only the earthquakes felt in November in Missouri and this is what it showed me. November 23 earthquakes in Missouri already.

These weren't all small earthquakes either. There was a 3.7 magnitude earthquake near Steele, Missouri on November 3 and a 3.2 magnitude earthquake near Carruthersville on November 16.

Do these previous earthquakes lead to a larger event?

There is no way to know. Even the USGS says you only know that an earthquake is a foreshock after a larger quake. I've been fortunate to get to know some USGS seismologists over the years and have learned that they are necessarily conservative and unexciting when it comes to earthquake analysis. They're not big fans of outrageous experts making big earthquake predictions based on occasional swarms.

I think a warning stance is the right way to monitor these swarms of smaller earthquakes in New Madrid, but it's also good to be aware of sudden spikes in activity in case something more significant occurs. The activity in Missouri in November was certainly interesting, but it's not a cause for concern – yet.
