British cabinet ministers banned from visiting Russia after missile attack | Russia

Russia has banned cabinet ministers Angela Rayner, Yvette Cooper and Rachel Reeves from entering the country under new sanctions announced by Moscow's Foreign Ministry.

More than a dozen other senior Labor politicians were among the 30 British citizens placed on Russia's suspension list as tensions between London and Moscow escalated after Ukraine recently used British missiles to attack deep inside Russia.

Moscow also said it was expelling a British diplomat on spying charges, the latest in a series of expulsions that reflect strained relations following Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine.

Britain this week imposed new sanctions on 30 oil tankers from Russia's shadow fleet aimed at squeezing President Vladimir Putin's funds for his war in Ukraine.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it had added politicians, military officials, journalists and technology industry figures to its banned list due to the British government's “relentlessly aggressive anti-Russian rhetoric.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy have already been banned from entering Russia, and 39 senior British politicians, businessmen and journalists are on the list in 2022.

Russia's domestic intelligence agency, the FSB, announced Tuesday that it had taken action on a document accusing a British diplomat of engaging in reconnaissance and subversive activities that threatened national security.

The diplomat claimed that he violated Russian law by intentionally providing false information when applying to enter Russia. Russian media reported that the diplomat was given two weeks to leave the country.

The diplomat, whose photo appeared on a Russian TV news bulletin, replaced one of six British diplomats expelled in August on spying charges, according to the FSB. The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said at the time that the claim was unfounded.

A No 10 spokesperson said: To be clear, we refute these claims. They are unfounded. We are now considering our response.

This is not the first time the Putin government has made malicious and unfounded accusations against our employees.

Last May, Britain expelled a senior Russian military attaché for acting as an undeclared military intelligence officer. In retaliation, Moscow ordered the British defense attaché to leave Russia.

Last September, Russia announced it had revoked the credentials of six British diplomats accused of spying, coinciding with Starmer's visit to Washington where the use of Storm Shadow missiles will be discussed.

The spokesperson added: The British Government is unapologetic about protecting our national interests and will now respond when the time is right, and our Embassy in Moscow will continue its vital work in Russia to support British interests.

Relations between Britain and Russia hit a new low last week after Britain agreed to allow Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles against targets inside Russia. The approval comes days after US President Joe Biden agreed to do the same for America's long-range Atacms weapons.

The decision to authorize the strikes came in response to the deployment of more than 10,000 North Korean troops on the border between Russia and Ukraine, which British and U.S. officials warned would mark a major escalation in the nearly three-year conflict.

Kiev later used Storm Shadow missiles to attack a command center in the village of Marino in the Kursk region. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that Britain sent dozens more missiles to Ukraine a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, British soldiers have been drafted in to help the US Air Force find out who is responsible for flying drones to three bases in the UK.

The USAF confirmed that a small number of drones were seen flying over RAF Rakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk overnight.

It comes days after a small number of unmanned aerial vehicles were confirmed to have been spotted near three bases from Wednesday to Sunday.
