More than $50,000 raised for family of 16-year-old hockey player struck by stray bullet in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS Thousands of dollars are pouring in for 16-year-old CBC hockey player Colin Brown.

The overwhelming support, trying to lift the teenager, hit by a stray bullet.

It's been 72 hours since Colin and his father were in the car on Interstate 55 when gunfire broke out in St. Louis.

Brown has been in the hospital since Saturday.

St. Louis Police Chief Robert Tracy called it an “unfortunate, tragically reckless incident involving someone firing a firearm and possibly shooting another person going the other way on the highway.”

As police continue their work, so does the community.

There are several fundraisers underway, including one by Dawg nation.

Dawg Nation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports hockey players, partnering with CBC and Affton Hockey.

The St. Louis chapter recognized the seriousness of Colin's situation and agreed to play a 3-on-1 match for up to $2,500.

As of Tuesday afternoon, it has raised more than $50,000, including their contest.

“This is the largest amount of money in a 24-hour period that we have ever seen,” said local chapter board chairman Ed Larkin.

The nonprofit's organizers said it's more than just raising money; it's about raising spirits.

Board member Ryan Mahoney said, “Often as a community we can feel helpless when this has happened and it's such a senseless tragedy and anyone who has driven in the car with their hockey player after a game can feel this.”

From fundraisers, vigils, prayers and hockey sticks outside homes, organizers have seen the support.

The local chapter's president and CEO, Jared Schmierbach, said, “Unfortunately, what we do with this charity exposes you to a lot of bad things. But you also see a lot of good.”

At this time the police also need help.

The shooting happened on I-55 near the Loughborough exit.
