No, CDC is not reducing the number of deaths associated with COVID-19

Washington – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not “retard” COVID-19 deaths, reducing this number from nearly 154,000 to just over 9,000, according to a social media post.

“The underlying cause of death is the beginning of a series of events that ultimately lead to human death,” said Dr. Robert Anderson, who oversees the CDC’s statistical study of death. “92% of all deaths that mention COVID-19 have COVID-19 listed as the underlying cause of death.”
Also, the death certificate should list the contributing causes and conditions, but past research has shown that the document is not complete. Doctors may not know or identify all the reasons behind a particular death.
More importantly, CDC numbers show what healthcare professionals have said since the outbreak of the pandemic. That is, the virus tends to more seriously affect people with the underlying disorder.
For example, people died of diabetes rather than diabetes, said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University.
“Without the COVID virus infection, these people would still be alive today,” he said. “Yes, they do contribute to underlying chronic health factors, but it was the COVID virus that killed them.”
