Isolation increases risk factors for suicide

“By reaching out to the suffering person, we can prevent most of the suicides,” said Elisa Brewworthin, executive director of the Waterloo Area Suicide Prevention Council.

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day. This date exists to bring awareness and understanding to those affected by suicide. Since 2003, more than 50 countries have cooperated in prevention and awareness measures. The world is now under the influence of another commonality: the pandemic.

CMHA CEO Margaret Eaton said: “The pandemic reveals how our mental health system has already been destroyed in Canada. We have invested in local mental health programs and services to improve our nationwide suicide prevention program and take this opportunity. And we need to fix the system in the long run.”

by Canadian Mental Health Association, A new national survey revealed warning signs that more Canadians are thinking about suicide in 2020 than in 2019 experienced suicide thoughts and feelings.

Elisa Brewer-Singh, Executive Director Waterloo Area Suicide Prevention Council (WRSPC) states that supporting awareness, intervention, and prevention of suicide is a role everyone should consider, especially now. “If you’re having a difficult conversation and trying to reach out to someone who’s struggling, you can prevent most of the suicides,” she said.

“Pandemics exacerbate some individuals’ risk factors for suicide, including previous mental health struggles such as depression, stressful life events such as loss of employment and income, and weakened social support including isolation. It could be.”

Brewer-Singh says COVID-19 forced us to explore virtual environments we hadn’t previously considered. This may allow access to previously uninvolved individuals due to stigma associated with mental illness or suicide.

WRSPC has hosted World Suicide Prevention Day for over a decade. Through free online events, they continue to recognize who has died or who is alive with suicidal desires and behavior.

In the week preceding World Suicide Prevention Day, WRSPC will host a virtual wellness fair. Facebook Distribute a free home activity kit. Hope is to encourage the community to engage in various World Suicide Prevention Day awareness activities.

“When someone is thinking about suicide, some help they show can be a conversation with someone who can share their findings and ask directly if they are thinking about suicide.” There may be an invitation for me.”-Shin said.

The next action could be an invitation to start a conversation.

• When you change your mood. For example, happy to sad, indifferent, excited, or aggressive

• Lack of interest or enjoyment in normal activities

• Express feelings of despair, burden, or lack of purpose

• Increased use of drugs such as drugs and alcohol

“We know that suicide affects people of all ages and backgrounds, but some demographics, including older adult men, are disproportionately affected,” she said. The addition of isolation barriers obscures these warning signs and allows for continuous check-in with friends and loved ones.

WRSPC World Suicide Prevention Day Virtual Event Streamed Facebook Includes speakers and live butterfly release at 6pm on September 10th. “It’s a good idea to tag your WRSPC and use the hashtag #WSPD2020WR to share an image of your activity with those who are attending at home,” adds Brewer-Singh.
