How Iceland saved teenagers – BBC News
In 1998, 42% of young people aged 15 to 16 in Iceland reported getting drunk in the last 30 days. By 2016, however, this figure had fallen to 5% and drug consumption and smoking had also fallen sharply. The action plan that led to this tremendous success is sometimes referred to as the “Icelandic model” and, while striking, it does not focus on stricter police or awareness campaigns to warn children of bad habits. Instead, top researchers are working closely with communities on initiatives such as parent engagement and night patrols after dark, while the government invests in recreational facilities.
