Hospital policy / spending plays in Richmond and Surrey

Liberal election candidates in British Columbia gathered in Richmond behind their leader Andrew Wilkinson on Saturday to commit to urgent reconstruction of the acute care tower at Richmond Hospital and to criticize the National Democratic Party for delays in the project.

Wilkinson was asked by the media about his party’s long-term financial planning. He replied that the right thing to do now is for the government to spend.

Wilkinson criticized the National Democratic Party for its delays in rebuilding Richmond Hospital and other projects, such as the replacement of the George Massey tunnel.

“It’s hard to point out anything the NDP has built. They’ve only completed BC Liberal projects and their newly started projects like Battolo Bridge and the hospital in Terrasse; nothing happened,” Wilkinson said at a media event outside the hospital.

NDP leader John Horgan committed to creating a new tower in the spring of 2017. Subsequently, Vancouver Coastal Health had a concept plan but had no business case under BC Liberals. Richmond MLA Center Teresa Watt, who is seeking re-election, unveiled its initial tower concept plan ahead of the 2017 election. Vancouver Coastal Health said it would take 18 months, or even Fall 2018, to formulate an action plan (in a fast way).

The National Party postponed the action plan for two years, and announced this summer that the reconstruction will be greater than the 2017 concept.

Now, according to a spokesperson Tim Chu, the NDP says, “The action plan is expected to be approved in the fall of 2020 and must be approved soon” with completion by 2024.

Wilkinson said his party agreed with the expanded plan but overshadowed the NDP’s willingness to agree to it in time. He offered no timeline for his own plan.
