Pandemic is the “moment”. Hack yourself
If we are empowered enough, we can see the system in disarray and focus our efforts on social innovation in order to “get things done” – but above all, we learn to be a community.
On February 26, 2010, I had a strange hunch. I felt there was going to be a big earthquake and I had the urge to flee to a safer place. I told my husband about it and he kindly ignored my warning and much preferred playing video games because he was sure nothing happened. I decided to leave the apartment with our son and visit my parents’ house. I explained to them that I had this hunch that something was wrong. They saw that I was really upset, so my family decided the best thing to do was throw an impromptu little party, sort of an apocalypse joke and we kept talking until 3:30 am the next morning. Since nothing happened, we just decided to call him daily and go to bed. It never occurred to anyone that after nearly four minutes, we would be spared one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. On February 27, 2010, an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck 93% of the Chilean population leaving us completely isolated and unable to communicate. Tragically, the tsunami killed 156 people who were not warned properly and in time.
At that moment, everyone was extremely frightened and turned into survival mode. Everyone is reacting differently to the crisis – some panicked, some pretended not to happen, and others gained superpowers. All I wanted to do at that moment was call my husband and tell him “I told you that,” but this kind of crises creates connection issues and that just fuels the mess. There was no internet or mobile phone service. I couldn’t reach him right away and felt the need to go out and rescue him, but at the same time I felt the urgent need for a reliable communication system in case of an emergency. I had no idea how to help or what to do because everything failed, we didn’t even know how much the zero point was. Somehow, in Chile, every authority has started phasing out old and analog communication systems because we now live in a digital age, but no one thought that all digital communication systems would immediately collapse because of this great earthquake.
After moments of panic I stopped and focused. I ran to the car radio, because the radio is the most reliable way to transmit information to the population, and even that was not working. By setting the dial and trying to switch stations, we were able to hear the radio broadcast from Mendoza, Argentina, which told us exactly what happened, where the ground zero was, and the severity of the earthquake. In a way, it brought us some peace. Then it struck me, one of the Eureka Moments. I began to think about what happened and how, from Argentina, we were able to get information in Chile. Since every Chilean national radio broadcast has died, electromagnetic waves have been reaching us from afar; So I realized, if we can receive broadcasts from Argentina, why not get data or emergency messages using the same method? I began to think about how great analog systems were and even how Morse code had been used in war to provide critical information over long distances.
This is how the S was born! E, the emergency information system allows information to be transferred to anyone affected by a disaster, even without internet or cellular service. We created a system that could send messages via high-frequency audio mixed with regular radio broadcasts, which could then be received and decoded on smartphones. From the chaos a big idea was born – an idea that changed my life.
Since this pandemic began, I have not been able to stop thinking about it – how crises represent opportunities for creativity and innovation, and how we position ourselves differently when we have to respond quickly and have to help our community.
I have to be honest here. Even though I had the idea in a time of crisis, it took me five years to empower myself, and understand that I want to help the world with technology and develop it. Why five years? Because when you are in survival mode, you shift your priorities to the basics and practical applications. After the earthquake, we had to communicate and prepare for aftershocks; Now during this epidemic, our top priority is to survive and achieve immunity, but at that moment in the earthquake, I was just starting college and thought I didn’t have the skills to develop technology, which wasn’t true. I was struggling with depression while trying to meet society’s expectations – as a woman, mother, wife, student and workers. I forgot the early empowerment I gained around the age of 12 in the ‘hacking’ stage. Early in my life, I wanted to prove I could do anything, but I had to trust myself first.
When we started building our startup and working on S! E, that was an empowering moment for that girl who wanted to reform the world and penetrate the system, but to do so, I had to penetrate herself first. Thanks to the technology we have developed, we have received awards from all over the world and become recognized in innovation and technology circles. I even became a role model for my former 12-year-old self – I’m now an inventor.
When the pandemic started this year, I already knew what to do during the crisis, how to manage priorities, and how to get innovative. As part of the innovation ecosystem, I have been able to leverage my network to help others.
We have designed, manufactured and distributed intubation and extubation capsules nationwide for COVID-19 patients, which prevent aerosols from spreading and infecting medical staff. We’ve created a campaign to receive donated laptops, repair and deliver them to young students without the means to participate in distance education. We are also creating STEM programs and courses for young people with the hope of empowering them through technology and demonstrating the potential of ‘Technology for All’ and ‘Technology for All’. We turned to “Pandemic Promethean” – one of this year’s CyFy themes, when we realized that the pandemic wants us together and connected, with the realization that people are the most important of all.
Startups and makers are proving that working dynamically and quickly is one of the main ways to deal with crises. Face shields, intubation / extubation capsules, mechanical respirators, face masks, and other items are quickly made to help during a crisis. This is what our governments need – more flexibility, more teamwork and to assess input from hackers, makers, startups, and the many unknown heroes, who from the start have adapted to change and have transformed themselves into Pandemic Prometheans. We realized that the big companies weren’t quick to adapt to this crisis, sometimes, you have to learn from the little ones. The teachers and medical staff left us speechless. Parents had to adapt their homes to protect their families, while working and educating their children at the same time.
Unfortunately, we suffered a lot of losses, but we learned that if we did not work together, everything would be much more difficult.
We can all see opportunities in crises. If we are empowered enough, we can see the system in disarray and focus our efforts on social innovation in order to “get things done” – but above all, we learn to be a community. We need physical distancing, but not social distancing. I invite you to strengthen your belief in humanity and work as a team, and to appreciate all the different people in your community because together we all form Pandemic Prometheans, and if you think you can’t do it, hack yourself.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
