UNC’s Matson, Syracuses Taylor earn ACC Field Hockey Honors
GREENSBORO, NC (theACC.com) North Carolina junior forward Erin Matson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, while Syracuse junior goalkeeper Syd Taylor earned the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Matson was involved in all three winning goals when the Tar Heels took three one-goal wins last week.
On Monday, she assisted Virginia in Meredith Sholder’s 52nd minute goal, and the Tar Heels advanced to a 2-1 victory. On Friday against Syracuse, Matson scored the lone goal of the game in a penalty corner in the 53rd minute of a 1-0 victory. On Sunday against Duke, she scored the second goal of the game to tie the score, 2-2. In the 47th minute she assisted Eva Smolenaars’ goal to advance UNC 4-2. After Duke scored twice in the last 12 minutes and went into extra time, Matson set Hannah Griggs’ goal in the 65th minute to give the Tar Heels a 5-4 victory.
Matson has scored or assisted in the winning goal in all six UNC victories this season. The resident of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania has four winning goals for the best team. She leads the team in both goals and assists with six each.
Syracuses Taylor conceded one goal in each of the two ACC road games last week when the Orange dropped the tough 1-0 decision at UNC on Friday and recovered with a 2-1 win over Wake Forest on Sunday.
Taylor, a resident of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, landed just one penalty corner goal while facing 13 penalty kicks. She made three saves in the win over Wake Forest and two saves against UNC in the match where Matson’s goal was the lone score.
