Charleston Chief Innovation Officer Tracy McKee said the city spent weeks designing a local dashboard using DHEC’s zip code data feed. DHEC posts data to state-wide dashboards, but Charleston’s site isn’t built to handle numbers in that format.
On Monday, DHEC sent an email to several local government officials informing them that on Wednesday, the agency would no longer share postal code-level data and the rest of ACS’s services. Post and Courier obtained a copy of the email through a request for freedom of information.
McKee replied that the warning did not give her enough time to prepare the missing data.
“At Charleston, zip code data drives the entire data-driven operational approach,” McKee wrote to DHEC in an email Tuesday. “This is a DHEC decision maker who doesn’t know how important this data is to the municipality and hopes that zip code level data will continue to be an open data source.”
Dr. Katherine Richardson, DHEC’s Lowcountry Medical Director, told McKee that she was trying to develop a portal that could circumvent the data-sharing contracts mentioned in the announcement email. Richardson writes that municipalities need to regain access to data “within a few days.”
Veronica Moore, DHEC’s GIS program manager, added that the department was “still in test mode” on Wednesday morning and is working on a term contract.
