The magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the San Agusan region in the Philippines early Monday morning. So far, no injuries have been reported at the site, but the company has noted some minor damage to a few building structures.

After the event, Medusa began a full structural review of the site, including mill and mine underground structures. However, operations on site proceed unhindered, while the review is put together.

This is not the first time this year that operations in Medusa have been threatened by an unexpected event.

Earlier this year, operations at Co-O Gold Mine were halted, after a small outbreak of COVID-19 was detected among site personnel. After a week of complete phasing and clearance of the mine and mill, work began on backup at the beginning of this month.

Despite closing the week, the company maintained its 2021 guidance for the entire year of 90,000 to 95,000 ounces of gold.

With work still unburdened for now, the latest earthquake is unlikely to shake current production projections.

Commenting on resuming operations at the start of the month, Chairman and Interim CEO Andrew Teo said the recent comment was the right decision.

“We believe the risk of on-site spread of infection (from the cases identified) has now been reduced. Our workforce has performed admirably in these conditions, as operations are proceeding as planned upon resumption.”

Medusa Mining closed down 0.62 percent at 80 cents a share.
