U-Edmonton begins clinical trials to combat outbreaks of Edmonton syphilis with dual HIV testing
The· University of Alberta Clinical trials have begun to combat the outbreak of syphilis in Edmonton and northern Alberta.
Officials said in a news release that as soon as 1,500 people go to the clinic for health care, they will be screened for a dual HIV and syphilis test kit.
Alberta Health Services Last year, it declared an outbreak of syphilis after 12 stillbirths and 1,753 newly diagnosed cases of syphilis (68% in the Edmonton area).
If the results are positive, the double test can provide treatment to the patient during the same visit, said Dr. Amita Singh, a clinical professor who leads the study.
Penicillin makes syphilis non-infectious within 24 hours of treatment, so it will prevent patients from developing further complications and prevent ongoing spread, he says.
Syphilis is a highly infectious sexually transmitted disease with symptoms ranging from genital pain to vision and hearing loss, heart attack and dementia.
Women who develop syphilis during pregnancy most often pass it on to their baby. This can lead to stillbirth and delayed development.
